Chicago Tribune’s Chris Jones remembers PJ Paparelli for desire to “make news as well as art”

“Paparelli was an artist with eclectic tastes and an uncanny sense of what was right for the moment. In my typical working week, I frequently find myself wondering why a particular theater has done a particular show at a particular moment. But I never had any of those thoughts at a Paparelli production. He always seemed to know how to fit his artistic interests to the needs of the moment. In journalism, they usually call this the “hook,” the reason to write what you are reading right now. Art has a complex relationship with the present; many of its practitioners think long term, and some consider themselves above the quotidian needs of the present. But not Paparelli. He had a knack for programming what you needed to see. Tonight. No wonder he was always so interested in primary sources. He wanted to make news as well as art.”

Auditions for Banger’s Elixir

Sunday, June 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Tuesday, June 16, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Entrepreneurial Launch Pad
507 Linden St., Scranton

DramaSutra @ Scranton Superstruction Co. is casting a team of creative, physical actors comfortable with improvisation to workshop a dark 20-minute comedy by Alicia Grega titled Banger’s Elixir, into a one-hour experimental theatre piece that will premier in October 2015 as part of the Scranton Fringe Festival.

We are specifically looking for actors to take on the following cast of characters, who work as wage slaves writing the subject lines of spam messages. Except for The Boss, who bosses them around.

Roger, 40s-50s. One track mind, comes on strong. An unapologetic asshole.

Christ, mid to late 30s. ChrisT not ChrIst. The new guy and stereotypical sensitive nice guy on the surface. Deep down, he’s conflicted and dissatisfied.

Monika, 30s. A little mousy. Pregnant with another child. One of those people who seems to attract bad luck and is consistently treated badly and taken advantage of.

Britney, 20-something tarted up blonde who is much more complex than the shallow sexual stereotype she plays for a living.

The Boss. Sleazy big jerk bully exploitative capitalist.

Email Dramastruction@gmail.com to request the seed script for review or to register for auditions or leave a message at 570-955-5793.

Photo & resume appreciated, but not necessary. Prepare a short monologue of your choice or we will give you something to read cold at the audition.

A nominal stipend, to be determined by ticket sale proceeds, will be shared with the cast.
